CURRENT – HOUSE PARTY

“Art is not only an object, but also a way of giving meaning. It has the power to transform reality and change our perception of the world.” This principle by philosopher Arthur Danto was an important source of inspiration for the House Party exhibition. Here, various design objects and works of art transcend their decorative function into meaningful statements. Each object therefore contributes to not only functional, but also physical and emotional expression.

A canvas of stories – from the painting on the wall, a sculpture on the table or a vintage lamp, each object has a unique, personal atmosphere. Here art and design are used to shape stories, and while these pieces are several little mirrors of their inhabitants, it also creates an opportunity great for conversations with third parties.

In this exhibition art is not seen as something confined to a gallery or museum but as an essential part of daily life. It transforms a house into a space of expression and experience, demonstrating art’s ability to infuse personality and create an entertaining environment – a house party in the most literal and figurative sense of the word.

House Party is a celebration of art and design as a personal statement and a tool for social connection. It invites visitors to think about their own environment and the role that art and design play in their home. After all, art and design is not just for decoration: they bring a space to life. In this respect, a house is more than a home – it becomes a personal house party in which art and design reflect the celebration of life itself.

AWAY  FROM THE CITY, WHERE THE HORSES ARE – PAST EXHIBITION

At the age of eighteen Iwan Smit (1989) moved to the centre of Rotterdam to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. He began studying graphic design followed by a study in fine arts.

While living and studying in Rotterdam, no stone was left unturned; meeting new people, seizing opportunities to show his work and making a name for himself as a young and upcoming artist.

Fourteen years later, in 2022, Smit had started losing interest in his city life, as it began to feel superficial – even empty at times. He struggled with overstimulation due to the city’s abundance, combined with the challenge of finding space to live and work. The thought of moving to calmer waters occurred.

In 2023, he answers to this call for a slower pace as he now lives and works in a small village a stone’s throw from Rotterdam. Not far from the city, but a different world nonetheless – a town that used to revolve around agriculture, with its fields and meadows still present today. The peace and quiet are a recipe for focus and productivity, though not all that glitters is gold for loneliness is his neighbour now…

In this solo exhibition, Smit tries to take you with him into the transition from city to village. He uses horses as a vehicle to address the paradox of freedom in solitude, playing with notions of repetition and mundanity.

SURREALISTIC SOIREE – PAST GROUPEXHIBITION

The year 2023 is coming to an end, during this time few yellow leaves hang upon the tree branches where the birds used to sing. At dusk, when the sun is setting in the west one makes its way inside. Here, the cold and darkness is replaced by warmth and comfort.

Gathering around the fire place sharing stories, festive dinners, playing games together, cooking and reading books. One’s home is a place where nothing is obligated. Yet, this season always comes with many festive holidays and commitments. Empowering one’s own interpretation to spending time together, this exhibition is about letting go of obligations and perfectionism.

During our Surrealistic Soiree we explored an alternative perception of togetherness, one that moves away from conventional norms.

We are excited to host this group exhibition with Rotteveel Vermeer, Serge Game, Studio Rink, Marie et Bernard, Alice van der Lande, Alisa Lim a Po & F U N D A M E N T E.

LIMITLESS –  PAST GROUPEXHIBTION

To explore the limits of a space with no limits the open floorplan in our soutterain has been turned into a space that represents the limitless of life and living. Throughout life we slowly collect personal items with all unique stories that represent our endless memories. The art of creating a personal home, a sacred place, ideas in the combining of all the different elements; a timeless set of vintage design together with new furniture, your first art piece and new collectible design.

But also, more personal items such as fine jewelry, a good piece of clothing, the pictures on your wall or the books that fill your bookcase. That together is home, a reflection of who you are and the life you want to live.

Since life has no limits your home should also have none.

We would like to invite you into a new narrative at DOEN. We are excited to host this group exhibition with Anouk Griffioen, Cengiz Hartmann, F U N D A M E N T E & Tweek-Eek.

From the 7th of July 2023 until the 31st of October 2023 LIMITLESS is at view at DOEN. For more information or inquiries contact us via eva@doen.do

POSTCARDS FROM ROTTERDAM – PAST GROUPEXHIBTION

In celebration of a new beginning, we reminisce about the history of a former post office through postcards. Travelling through an industrial space, one gains insight into a diverse collection where each piece is in dialogue with its surroundings.

The architecture guides you through different scenes, from displays of color, eventually moving into a nonchalant living space to end up into the new gallery space. The building features a unique volume in disguise of a vault that highlights a compelling interplay. Each objects with a voice of its own, offers an engaging experience that is revealed as the space unfolds.

With state of the art pieces from Alisa Lim A Po, over 65 international pieces by Objects With Narratives and lightining designs by Koen van Guijze we are more than thrilled to host the first group exhibition in the new underground gallery at DOEN.

The group exhitbion POSTCARDS FROM ROTTERDAM was on view from the 10th of February 2023 until the 10th of April 2023 at the Avenue Concordia 30 in Rotterdam. For any information or inquiries about POSTCARDS FROM ROTTERDAM contact us via eva@doen.do
